for everyone

...well almost.
This past week I've put 2 coats of stain on the Olde Shed...which was used as a cookhouse when our house was built in 1912 but serves as Cheryl's Garden Shed these days. .and we've started landscaping around it.

Last year's re-framing, re-walling and re-roofing projects, and the recent concrete flooring project, took out any landscaping around the old shed but with the front and side walls and eaves stained we can get to work making it look nice around the perimeter again. We've adopted 'Bordeaux' as our new color of choice for the shed and trimming out the house. When we moved into our house in 1995 we adopted Elderbury which is a dark purple color for doors, trim etc. as our "trim" color, ...I've told Cheryl I'm now firmly in my 'Bordeaux Phase!".

Last year we picked up almost all of the lumber for the outside and roof from Habitat for Humanity. We also bought the 20 pane front window from them for a whopping $25! I'm usually the one that goes overboard with the bigger is better idea and was leaning toward a simpler smaller single pane window, but thankfully Cheryl liked this one and we went with this one. The shed faces straight east and it a cool window to watch out as the sun comes up and that window definitely enhances it.

getting the walls and eaves stained, we started on the front section. We are kinda into frogs and moved a water fountain in front of the windows and of some of our frogs and other yard art into the front area. I'm also big into low voltage lighting and started wiring in our night lights.

We still have some wall work on the back ...and chimney work. When I re-roofed the shed last year I raised the roof up a couple feet and made it steeper and is now over the chimney and need to build it higher. I've also started flanking the chimney exterior with bonding cement to take care of some cracking in the chimney stone. Still not sure if I will go all the way up with that. When we first moved into our house in 1995 that shed was in my short list ot demolish but am very glad we have turned it around. It's also good practice for me for almost everything you can imagine which comes in handy for working on the garage and house.

Starting with this picture you can see the before view of the shed. This was taken Jan 2007 and was the way the old shed basically looked from 1995 to 2009 when I started redoing it. Note the old ashphalt tar paper with the faded brick design tacked on to the old rotting exterior boards.

Beautiful!
jasonedge wrote on Jul 11, '10
Yep...got to build it up over the roof! The new roof is quite a bit steepter/taller than the old one!

Added this picture and the next picture from 1989 to contrast the before and after.

Wow! What a difference! I would have thought about demolishing it too.

You did a wonderful job on the garden shed/cookhouse! It was one of my favorite spots to hang out at your house; especially when there was a fire roaring in the fireplace. :-)
