for everyone
We've undertaken a project long over due to replace the exterior of the old cook house which is Cheryl's garden shed these days. It has a big open fireplace which we use for burning scraps and sometimes just having a fire for marshmallows or hot dogs.

I had already worked on the back of the big chimney retipping the top and securing the bottom and wrapping some walkway pavers around it.

For our anniversary we decide to go to Habitat for Humanity and pick up some good used lumber for the old shed. Cheryl didn't want new lumber and thought this was a great way to reuse some lumber and save some money. We headed out with the car hauler trailer on April 9th and picked up a large load of lumber for enought to do the sides and roof of the shed. We started on the front by ripping off the old rotted boards and bracing with 2x6's. Cheryl also picked out a really cool large 5' x 6' window for the front of the shed to let in light. Habitat for Humanity has some great prices if you look for deals. We picked up this solid old pane window for $25. All the lumber and window came to just over $300. The 30 nice 12 ft 2 x 6 x 12' boards alone would have cost that at Home Depot or Lowes!

Here are some pictures from the past few days including work in the old shed and a few from around the house. You will see the Weeping Willows which are sapplings from Elvis Weeping Willow and the Euonymus Garden that is really starting too look cool.

We have a long way to go on the old cook house/garden shed but we have the rest of our lives to work at it....just like everything else around our old house.

Update 5/25/09: We have the top off and the back wall reboarded. More pics to come.

Ok...finished a bit of the front wall for now. I had thought of trying to do the overhead gable end now but think I may go ahead and pull the entire roof off and do all at once. The shed is cool inside now, with all the light coming in.

This is pretty, real spring-time looking

Love that purple trim on the house, looks great!

And I like those twisty trees, too.

Lookin' good!

That window will let in so much light!

What are the purple plants in this picture?
catmommeg wrote on Apr 11, '09
I like this picture too, very Little House on the Prairie, used to love that show!

How old is this fireplace and the shed?

catmommeg wrote on Apr 11, '09
I am seeing lots of pavers around your house.

Do you hire out for jobs? LOL

I need the area under my deck to get pavers put in, area is 10 feet x 20 feet. We should have done it a long time ago, but very few people will take on a job that small.

jasonedge wrote on Apr 11, '09
Meg, I wish I did hire out....all work on the house other than putting in ac/heat and roof shingles has been by me. I need to get some of the early pictures of our place posted...it's changed a lot.
We think the cook house was build in 1912 when the house was built. Both the cook house and the main house are on the National Register of Historic Places within the Garner District.
I think the purple stuff is thift...Cheryl can confirm.

Jason.

There have been many dump truck loads of white river rock, crush and run, and top soil brought in over the years. I've got more videos of some of the other earlier projects I will have to post.

Meg the flowers are Thrift or Creeping Phlox ( Flox, Flocks?!!) not sure of the spelling!. They are really beautiful right now, and butterflies love it!
catmommeg wrote on Apr 11, '09
Hi Cheryl, thanks, Phlox I think is how you spell it.

I am looking for something that will only get about 12" high, but this looks taller than that? The purple caught my eye!

I need something to put in front of the low bushes under my window, something low maintenance.

;-)
cheryledge wrote on Apr 12, '09
This would be perfect Meg, it's actually less than 12 inches tall, maybe just looks taller because of perspective in the pic. Down here it also reblooms in winter. Not as full of flowers, but a nice pop of color.
catmommeg wrote on Apr 12, '09
Thanks, I will look for this at the garden center (Lowe's).

Our front windows are very low, so anything I plant there also has to be very low.

The bushes there now are about 2 1/2 feet tall, and I want something in front of them.

More plants mean Less Grass To Mow, and I am all for that!

that would be a neat pinball to have ---

Just added quite few more pictures starting with this one from the last 3 days. Tops been removed and the back wall has been reframed and boarded back up. Slowly but surely we are getting the old shed back in shape. Cick on picture at right and scroll to end to see new pictures. You will see a couple of our yard cat Gracie.
